The Celarain Lighthouse, at the southern tip of Cozumel inside Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks. More than a maritime beacon, it is a symbol of history and resilience.
From the Eiffel company to reinforced concrete
The first lighthouse at Punta Sur was built in the early 20th century with a metal structure designed by engineers from the Eiffel company in France. The salty Caribbean climate eventually corroded its base.
In 1934 the current lighthouse was built in reinforced concrete with steel rings. That design has held for nearly a century, guiding ships and outlasting the island’s strongest hurricanes.
Climbing it
133 steps lead to a panoramic view over the reef, the lagoon and the open Caribbean — the reason most visitors remember this stop above the rest.

- Yes. It is 133 steps to the top, and the view over the southern tip of Cozumel is the best on the island. Wear closed, comfortable shoes for the stairs.
- What should I bring to Punta Sur?
- A swimsuit and towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and comfortable shoes if you plan to climb the Celarain Lighthouse. Regular sunscreen is not allowed in the marine park because it damages the reef.
- How long does a Punta Sur tour take?
- Between four and five hours depending on the tour: the 4x4 Adventure and the RZR Experience run about four hours, and the snorkel excursion and the family ATV tour about five.
